NDR RADIO STUDIOS

Hamburg / 2008

Competition 1st Prize

The overall plan for the new arrangement of the NDR North German Broadcasting site at Rothenbaum in Hamburg aims to integrate the urban and landscape contexts and also to create a new order that can express itself architecturally. The calmly staggered run of buildings on the east side is the main feature of the joint address with the Norddeutscher Rundfunk in Mittelweg. The linear structure of the new radio studio relates in articulation and orientation to the neighbouring neoclassical buildungs and takes account of the valuable stock of mature trees. This produces a “media campus” with an open sequence of park-like space. The green surroundings make a direct impact on the offices, which are glazed from floor to ceiling, and the open loggias on the top floor, while the studios are equipped with a protecting second façade layer of horizontal glass louvres that reflect the surroundings by day and show the varied play of a light installation at night.
