CONGRESS HOTEL

Karlsruhe / 2003

Competition 1st Prize

The hotel complements the Kongresshalle with a striking high point on the baroque “Via Triumphalis” urban axis. The hotel and its open foyer open on to the forecourt and arcade of the Congress Centre and ensure that citizens will still be able to follow the diagonal route that has always existed. At the same time the café provides plenty of variety in the open air in this communication area. The lobby, restaurant, bistro and beer bar are attached to the entrance hall. The banqueting hall faces the internal bamboo garden. The façade is in concrete stone elements with coloured additions and a sand-blasted surface. The window types show what the various floors are used for, the high ground floor, the congress level on the first floor and the four floors of rooms above this. The rigid façade order is varied by the window shapes, changing floor by floor from two- to three-dimensional, from flush to recessed window openings.
