Financial Centre Erfurt

Erfurt / 1998

A modern office centre and the academy of the S-Finanzgruppe Hessen-Thüringen is being built on the site of the former Benary seed cultivation building. This centre accommodates various uses, each in a separate “house”; they include lecture rooms, offices and a boarding-house/hotel for academy course members. The rotunda, the cental point, houses communal facilities like casino, cafeteria, kitchen, conference and guest dining-rooms. The design idea is based on the principle of an open structure, as an analogy with the typical urban buildings if the period of rapid industrial expansion in the early 1870s. This typology is appropriate to the subject of buildings in an inner-city park. Here the proportions of the surrounding area are taken up and projected on to the surface. The fine brick buildings on the site dating from the turn of the century, like the former Benary office building and the warehouse, are integrated into the new building structure, but retain their solitaire character.
